Be Mobile, Be Smart
Learn Strategies to Manage Email on Your Mobile Device

Guest Post By: Carson Tate

It’s 3:09pm. Hungry, restless, maybe just done for the day. You’re in desperate need of a break from meetings, conference calls, you name it. So, you decide to check your email on your mobile device. That innocent need to keep your inbox under control is plagued by the thought of the time it to read the emails. Then to respond to, file, organize, or maybe just remember not to forget to do it all  when you’ve got more time. It’s a lot to think about.

I get it.

On Tuesday, July 22 at 7:30pm with Local Levo Charlotte Leader Caitlin Sellers via Google Hang Out on Air, I'll be sharing my go-to strategies for your relationship with email on mobile. As a productivity expert, I travel the country regularly, working with thousands of clients to eradicate the ‘busyness’ epidemic. And your mobile device’s inbox - or inboxes? It’s/they’re part of that epidemic. Let’s get it under control.

To get started, there are five quick things I want you to think about when it comes to how you manage your email on your mobile device.

1. Why do we care so much about email on our phones?

As much as we like to think it’s about work or deadlines or staying on top of things, it’s really about connecting with people. Your email on your phone allows you to maintain connectivity to not only your work, but also your friends, your family, your life.

2. How often do you reply to an email on your mobile and then not manage anywhere else?

I do not recommend managing email on your mobile device as your primary email management strategy. You have limited functionality on a mobile device that is ideal for quick responses, urgent requests, or acknowledgements of receipt. You should always follow up with either a phone call or longer email to handle or resolve the urgent request.

3. What’s your personal email management strategy?

Managing email on mobile should be part of your personal, larger email management strategy. It is one piece of the email strategy puzzle that allows you to maintain connectivity from almost anywhere in the world, allowing you to work from virtually anywhere – which is a blessing and a curse. So, how are you designing your email management strategy around your life, your work, your brain, and your productivity style?

4. What’s possible for you, your work, your life when you manage your email on mobile?

If used well, it will also decrease the amount of time you spend overall managing your email. You’ll have more time to spend doing something you love to do.

5. How can I implement one quick tip to manage email on my mobile starting now?

Read the email then act on it. Re-reading your messages wastes significant amounts of time. If the action required takes longer than 2-3 minutes, create a folder labeled EMAIL TASKS and move the message to this folder. When you are back at your computer, open this folder first in your email application and execute on these items.

I want you to be smart, efficient, organized, connected, and productive – to build a career and life you love. I also want you to figure out what works for you, your email, your time. So, come learn more; I’m sharing more tips, strategies, and tools on July 22. Can’t wait to connect with you.
